This is the time where we need to take a stand
Police brutality is the use of uncontrolled force by police. There are many forms of police brutality including beatings, torture and sometimes murder. Some general definitions of police brutality encompass threatening and verbal abuse, among other cruel treatments. There are many examples of police brutality in the USA. One notable instance occurred in 2010 when Iraq war veteran Walter Harvin suffered a beating at the hands of New York police officer David London. An argument began, in which London hit Harvin with his baton and then continued to hit and kick him even after he was on the ground. There was CCTV of the incident, however, what’s strange is that London was not held accountable. Walter Harvin was African American.
There have been many protests over police brutality — not just by civilians but also by writers and musicians. Hip-Hop group NWA — “N****z Wit Attitudes,” which consisted of Eazy- E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and DJ Yella, released a song in 1988 called “F*ck tha police” a protest song, which talked about police brutality. They were told by police at multiple concerts that they were not allowed to perform it, and were even arrested for performing it. In 2015 the movie Straight Outta Compton was released, named after NWA’s first studio album. The movie talks about the NWA and their experiences with the police. In the same year, Kendrick Lamar released his album To Pimp a Butterfly with a song titled “Alright” that deals with police brutality. Lamar was never told not to perform this song or threatened with arrest.
Police brutality is still a problem and is mainly targeted to black people. A boy named Travyon was shot in Sanford Florida by a white man. Travyon was only 17 years old. Tamir Rice another African-American was also shot in Cleveland, Ohio by a White police officer. Tamir was only 12 years old younger than Travyon. He was unarmed and was not doing anything illegal. 32-year-old African- American Philando Castile was shot by a White police officer as well. George Floyd was killed after being accused of passing a fake $20 bill. He was tortured by a white police officer who sat on his neck for 8 minutes. This shows that Police Brutality is not getting any better over the years *and the police target people from all ages.
All five of these people were black. They were all shot even though they had not been accused of anything. I think that these men were killed by the police because they were black. Statistics show that black people are six times more likely to be killed by a police officer than white people. 30% of the black people that are shot by the police are innocent. I think people are more likely to be killed by the police if they’re black, because in the USA there has always been racism and discrimination towards black people.
I don’t think all of those police officers were evil people. I think they were scared, or they saw other police officers doing it, so they did it. They were definitely racist, otherwise they wouldn’t shoot black people for not doing anything wrong. Maybe they weren’t all consciously racist but deep down they were all racist even if they didn’t know it.
Black Lives Matter is a movement that started on July 13, 2013. Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi started this movement. and The movement aims to end racism, gun violence, and police brutality against African Americans. And although it started in the United States, BLM is now all around the world. Sparked by the death of George Floyd there have been many protests all around the world to save black lives. These protests are demanding an end to police brutality, racism, gun violence, etc.
We can end police brutality by training police officers not to kill black people by telling them it is wrong. We can ask them how they would feel if some police officer randomly shot them. We can hold many protests and train them not to use unnecessary force. We can end racism by educating people that everyone is equal.
